Seis Ocho restaurant: haute cuisine and high design on the outskirts of Madrid.

With clear New York and London influences, this restaurant in Madrid aims to be different: for its situation, architecture, type of food and wine list. The unusual Seis Ocho restaurant is fruit of a collaboration between 3G Office -a multinational engineering and architecture firm- and the celebrated illustrator Santiago Morilla.

The establishment is named after its location in 68 Albasanz street, an industrial area in Suanzes metro station. For the architects, the project presented the challenge of creating a desirable, relaxing space within the context in flux of Julian Camarrillo urban-industrial park, that is also a business hub. This environment defined the informal and modern approach to the project.

Pre-existing, ‘hidden’ parts of the building were discovered whilst carrying out the works. A decision was made to conserve all constructive elements such as exposed brick walls, metal beams and concrete supports. An existing false ceiling was replaced with an untreated deployé metal mesh and ceiling infrastructure painted black, creating an open, industrial feel. When the old wooden floor was pulled up, a concrete one was discovered underneath. It was then treated with resins to protect it from heavy foot traffic.

In order to accentuate the large scale of the dining room and its double-height ceiling, all decorative elements are equally as large. The facade takes shape with a trellis of large natural wood slats that recalls industrial packaging and tame the exterior views, generating an intimate feel inside without feeling ‘closed off’.

Large Corten steel surfaces were employed in the outdoor terrace, the staircase and the kitchen’s facade. The latter has a highly urban feel, with perforated windows scattered all over in order to integrate the kitchen and dining area.

The main feature of the dining room is the large mural by illustrator Santiago Morilla. It depicts a businessman eating pasta and captures the casual spirit of the restaurant.

The kitchen is lead by Begoña Fraire, ex Loft 39 and head of the catering business Foodtimes & Co. She is the ‘frontwomen’ of a young and enthusiastic team, fearless of promoting innovation in these precarious times and unusual place.

At Seis Ocho you can have tapas from the gastrobar in the bar or terrace, as well as eat a la carte or try the tasting menu in the main dining room; also there is a massive secret table available.

This table is a new initiative that invites clients to sit down at the table where the kitchen staff works, creates and discusses dishes and wines. It’s where they eat and try out new creations. This ‘family table’ is full of sensations and warmth and is an insight to what goes on inside the kitchen. A unique experience.

Seis Ocho is the proof that there is gastro life -and much more- outside the city centre.
